What is Hypnosis?
Stage Hypnosis Update
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis, by definition, is the subconscious realization of an
idea. Most people believe that Hypnosis is sleep, when it is actually
a very focused concentration. All the senses are heightened during
hypnosis and the subject feels relaxed and comfortable. Through
hypnosis, the subject is able to set aside their critical factor
and suggestions are placed directly into the subconscious mind.
Unlike the conscious mind, which analyzes information to determine
it’s validity, the subconscious only has two choices. It will
either ACCEPT or REJECT the information being suggested. If it is
dismissed then it will simply ignore the information and reject
it. If, however, it is accepted, then it will become the their reality.
Our human nature is to move towards pleasure and away from pain,
so if a suggestion is something that we will enjoy or benefit from,
we will usually accept it. In a stage show setting, most people
have let down their guards, releasing their inhibitions and unleashing
their creativity in an effort to have a good time. HOWEVER, a subject
will not do anything that is morally or ethically against their
values. In the movie,” Curse of the Jade Scorpion”,
Woody Allen is “hypnotized” into stealing jewelry from
homes after he participates in a stage hypnosis show. The truth
is that a person will not do anything that they would not while
not in a state of hypnosis. Hollywood has painted an image of “watch
swinging hypnotists” creating havoc on peoples’ minds
and has never really represented the true, positive power of hypnosis.
The truth is that Hypnosis is taught in major medical schools such
as Harvard and UCLA for helping patients with stress, pain management
and many other positive applications. Most people are familiar with
hypnosis as a means to lose weight or quit smoking, which is an
area where hypnosis is highly viable and offers success for serious
subjects willing to participate in the process of hypnotherapy.
Hypnosis is an amazing tool we all posses and the key is learning
how to access it when we need it. Professional athletes like Tiger
Woods and Michael Jordan are documented users of hypnosis as mental
preparation for their sport. They are able to prepare mentally for
the challenge of competing at the highest level by rehearsing their
performance while in a trance state. The result is focus and maximum
physical and mental efficiency while playing their respective games.

This Months Tip
Stage Hypnosis Rule Number 1: Take control of
your audience!
From the moment you step on stage, you are establishing yourself
as a legitimate professional. You have to earn the audience’s
trust and simultaneously establish some level of compliance with
the group. I start my shows with some high-energy music and encourage
the audience to get on their feet and clap their hands. This gets
them moving and energizes an otherwise “dead” room filled
with people sitting and waiting for the show to begin. Also, it
establishes a little “compliance” by getting them up
and on their feet. Hypnosis is a lot like sales; every little yes
leads them to a bigger yes later. (The Induction for your show)
If you have a bunch of lame people who don’t get up and rockin’
with the music. You may be in for a short night. Establish control
early, and lead them into participating with small tests…Thats
next month!
We are planning to offer a Stage Hypnosis Training Program in
the next few months. This training will include everything you will
need to become a successful stage hypnotist. Thom will teach the
course, and all participants will receive extensive training and
hands on experience. In addition, you will attend several Las Vegas
Shows to see Stage Hypnosis and the different styles that are used
by performers. Let us know if you would like to attend! Details
in an upcoming issue of “The Mindbender”
If you are an aspiring performer, continue to refine your techniques
and keep an open mind. You can always learn something new that can
make you just that much better!
Until next month,
Stay In Trance!
